Comments
The key theme of this work is "opposition" or opposing forces. The two faces face away from each other with a stubborn countenance, and to further emphasize their mutual obstinance, the opposing vertical edges arc toward each other and force each to visually lean against the other as if to apply pressure. The wood virtually ripples under this stress and this stress is mirrored once more in the lamination distinctive in the growth rings.
