Comments: The human figure is for me the most challenging and therefore the most satisfying of sculpture genres. No matter where I wander with my abstract work I will
return here from time to time for some self discipline.
It seems that nothing can quite capture the core of an emotion more than the human figure itself. In Self Conscious I have distorted the figure in a manner as to intensify the feeling of a person full of self doubt. It visually captures one of those life searching, life discovery, and life defining moments where nothing we see in ourselves is quite on par with the image we want to project. My thoughts were sympathetically with the psychologically troubled students, such as those who perpetrated the Colombine shootings, as I created this. It outwardly reflects how inwardly the subject feels about the image they are projecting to others around them. The nudity, right down to the hairless head is symbolically representative of the vulnerability they feel among their peers.
